WATERJET CUTTING

WHAT IS WATER JET CUTTING?

Water jet cutting is accomplished by the introduction of "garnet" (80/120 mesh) into an ultra high pressure stream of water. This stream of water is formed by forcing it through a jewel orifice .010 in diameter at a pressure of over 50,000 psi. The speed of this stream of water approaches over 2000 miles per hour, 3 times the speed of sound. The garnet is introduced in a mixing chamber before passing through a .030 diameter carbide focusing tube and onto the surface of the material being cut. The jet-stream cuts without heat and exerts little vertical or lateral force. The accuracy of the CNC controlled cutting head and the small kerf (usually less than .030) permits close placement of irregular shaped parts greatly reducing material waste. With this process, many secondary operations such as rough machining, deburring, pre-drilling and removal of recast layers, resulting from heat source cutting can be eliminated.

Water jet cutting can provide limitless products from a wide variety of materials up to 8" in thickness such as; steel alloys, aluminum, copper, ceramic tiles, stainless steel, plastic, stone, laminates, glass, wood, foam, rubber, tungsten, and composites.
